Singer-actress Karylle has expressed her sympathy to an American who was reportedly scammed by a Filipina through the Internet. In a report published in ABS-CBN news website, Karylle said she felt bad for American Allan Toor.
In The Freeman report dated November 26, the woman, who was a native of Zamboanga City but who has since resided in Consolacion, Cebu, duped Toor by using the actress-singer’s photo in a dating website. Reports identified the suspect as 29-year-old Arkishra Toribio Manuel. In a 10-page letter sent to the Cebu City Police, Toor said he fell in love with the suspect and asked her to marry him. She also sent Manuel, who claimed she was a nurse, around P100,000 to help process her papers to move and work in the US.
The American only found out about the scam when Manuel failed to show up at the airport in the United States on October 16, the scheduled arrival of the suspect. This prompted the American to seek help from the local police to further stop the suspect from luring clueless foreigners to her scam. When she first heard of this report, Karylle told the showbiz-oriented program The Buzz that she initially thought that it was a joke. She said she only realized the seriousness of the situation when she finally read the details of the report.
“Siyempre naaawa ako doon sa taong puso niya [binigay niya], nagbigay pa siya ng pera. Foul na,” she was quoted by ABS-CBN. “Kailangan hindi tayo gumagawa ng masamang bagay at nanggagamit pa tayo ng ibang tao. Siyempre dinadaya mo pa ang ibang tao.” Karylle also said that, as of now, she is not yet considering a filing of a case against Manuel for unauthorized use of her photo.
