After eating homemade hotcakes on Monday night seven kids had to be rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center. The youngest of the cousins of 3 different families in Barangay Labangon in Cebu City is just 9 years old. Roughly 15 minutes after eating the hotcakes they all started vomiting. One of the fathers then gave his own 3 kids coconut milk, and they vomited even more. Then they got finally sent to the hospital in Cebu City.
The manager of the emergency room said that either the eggs or the flour used for the hotcakes was probably spoiled and got the kids poisoned. It is also possible that the hotcakes where prepared the wrong way or the used ingredients had been stored wrongly. He assured that the children are feeling better already and are in a good condition.
Some samples of the “really hot” hotcakes have been sent to the Food and Drug Administration to have them checked. After the FDA declined to do so they recommended a check in the Department of Science and Technology. This examination would have to be paid for by the person who wants it checked, in this case the parents. They on the other hand blame the shop where they bought the ingredients for the hotcakes to be responsible for the poisoning of their kids.
The shop-owner also felt sick after tasting the said hotcakes, but said she did not see any sign of spoilage on the unbranded flour she bought in the Carbon market. She doubts it was the flour bought in her shop that caused the vomiting since she used the same one to cook beef steak for her own Christmas meal and nothing happened. She still agreed to help the families cover the medical bills though.
