For this month of May there will be a homecoming celebration for all batches who graduated from the BBM – HRM program of the University of the Philippines Cebu. The much anticipated event will be on May 25, 2013, Saturday 4:00 pm at the UP Cebu Lahug Campus. The organizing committee had planned to hold the affair in a different location but after a recent consensus, majority of the graduates preferred to have it within the school grounds. It would be more nostalgic and significant considering that almost all batches will be represented. The BBM – HRM program of UP Cebu ran from 1976 up to 2004 before it was closed due to enrollee population irregularities.
Aside from gathering the HRM graduates from the very first to the last batch, during the program the search for the Top 5 Most Outstanding HRM Alumni will be launched. This is the search for the top 5 alumni who excelled in the field of Tourism and Hospitality. Members from the various batches will submit their nominees and a panel of judges will review them to come up with the top 5 candidates.
According to the organizers, their biggest challenge in organizing the awarding ceremony is gathering the alumni and getting them to attend. It is not just one batch of alumni but rather three decades worth of graduates who are scattered all across the globe. With this in mind they are sure that should the event be successful, it will be a truly magnificent homecoming for the UP Cebu HRM graduates.
One of the major goals for this event is the revival of the HRM program. The department is actively in dialogue with the HRM alumni organization to re-integrate the BBM-HRM prospectus. It was decidedly removed from the course offering of the college back in 2004. It was during that time that the industry suffered a blowback from the recession and demand for the course diminished. Now, due to the re-emergence of the tourism and hospitality industry in the region, the number of students interested in taking up HRM, HM or Tourism has dramatically increased and certain members of the alumni who are active in the industry have been clamoring for the administration to bring it back. Whether or not the course will be reintegrated in the UP Cebu College, the fact remains that the alumni from this program have made a mark in the tourism and hospitality industry in Cebu directly and indirectly. The launching of the search for the Top 5 Alumni will make sure these individuals who have indeed made significant impact will be given due recognition.
The organizers are encouraging all BBM – HRM graduates from UP Cebu to attend the reunion.
